The words "outsourcing," "foreign imports" and "global competition" tend to make manufacturers cringe.
In a sector devastated by job losses, with thousands of workers losing their jobs due to international factors, it can be a challenge for manufacturers to see beyond the threats to the inherent opportunities.
That's what the Capital Area Manufacturing Council did last week when it brought together a group of manufacturers to talk about expanding exports of goods built in the Greater Lansing area.
It's increasingly clear we need to export more to grow our manufacturing sector in the capital area, said Bob Sherer, executive director of the Capital Area Manufacturing Council. As the council learned, there is plenty of help in the area to simplify the pathway to exports and expand upon existing foreign sales.
With support from Rehmann Group LLC and Foster, Swift, Collins and Smith PC, the group learned how to tap into a vast network of trade assistance activities.
Some of the top tips:
• Take advantage of the range of organizations manufacturers can access for support, such as the Lansing Regional Chamber and Capital Regional International Airport, home to Port Lansing.
• Assemble your team early in the process, including the appropriate accountants, lawyers, bankers and transportation experts, to ensure you're successful from the beginning.
• Look to Michigan State University for guidance. From the International Business Center's "Guide to Exporting" to the global-EDGE Web site and Michigan Export Growth program, the university provides a wealth of information for local companies, as does the U.S. Department of Commerce.
